PREFACE

Revival is not a three-day event that we advertise as “Revival.” It’s not a state of mind, but a state of perpetual impact that drastically changes the moral climate of an area. The way people think in that region changes. The way people treat each other changes. The fog of deception begins to lift and the “eyes of their understanding are enlightened.” Revival is an experience not a definition. It can’t be germinated in a test tube of theology; it can only be demonstrated by radical obedience of those who pursue it. It deals with people, not statistics.

Revival does not look like we expect it to look. Revival is shocking. It never dresses the same, never smells the same; it’s unorthodox. It’s unreligious. It surprises, it’s hardly ever invited or expected. It comes on its own terms and in its own way. Suddenly. And it doesn’t always wear the face we expect. It can be painted black or white; it may have piercing and tattoos. It may smell like urine or fancy cologne. Revival never comes like we expect. It shows up on Sunday morning in the middle of a well-thought-out sermon. It comes and sits at our feet and begs for a piece of bread. It comes to us in its worst while we’re at our best. It demands more than we have to give. It demands God.

Revival is waiting for us on the streets. It’s hiding from us in nursing homes and prisons. It’s calling to us from foreign fields and obscure places. Crying, yearning for even one person who will rise from the confines of normality and pursue it. It’s a person who will approach the throne of grace with boldness and expect a miracle; who will stand on a street corner and wait for its shadow to pass by. Knowing that at any minute the wind that blows where it wants to may touch down in that very spot — exploding, expanding everything it touches. Revival is a fire, and souls are its kindling.

We are the catalysts of this fire. We are the riverbeds that this torrent comes through. We are the gatekeepers who must cry out, “Here am I send me!” Revival is not a hand on a clock waiting for the alarm to sound. It’s the ever-beating heart of every person who contains the treasure of eternal life — that hope of glory, Christ in us. Once we begin to step from the porches of tradition into the ghetto of the impossible, we’ll begin to see His power unprecedented. It’s through our hands He desires to demonstrate His glory. It’s through our lips He longs to express His personality. We are revival.

The next great move of God will be seen in the streets. Harvest is not experienced in test tubes and sheltered places. Harvest is experienced only in the open air with the hot sun and the cool evening breeze. Harvest is not something confined and measured and grown in air-conditioned buildings. Its abundance usually comes forth through sweat and effort. Harvest is outside. Harvest is where the people are. And church, harvest is upon us — Harvest is most surely upon us.

Cry of the Spirit is Harvest

So the harvest of hearts sways to the sound of church bells,
Oblivious to the sound of eternity,
With no knowledge of heaven or hell…

The child wanders the streets, with nothing to eat,
His heart hardened by life’s severity,
Yearning, longing to lay it at the Master’s feet.

The orphan and the widow search the streets for a home,
Wandering for God’s eternal Hope,
Begging us from the streets not to be forgotten and alone…

The cry of the Spirit is "PREPARE!”
Cast out the nets and ropes!
The season to reap is here!

SPARE NOT! Lengthen your cords!
Cast your nets on the other side!
This is the day of the Lord!

Stretch out your curtains! Strengthen your stakes!
Get ready! Make haste!
As the levees of revival break!

This is the day the Lord has made!
To reap the harvest white,
To finish the race…

Launch out! Go into the fields!
Let your light so shine!
My power through you revealed!

Then the orphan and widow will say,
“Surely God is in you…”
By the love you show and the glory displayed…”

The prisoner will exclaim
“You came unto me!
I was lost, but now I AM FREE!”

The blind man will shout,
“I can see! I can see!”
The skeptic will surely say, “I BELIEVE!”

The cry of the Spirit is, “PREPARE,
Cast out your nets and ropes,
The Harvest is here!
The Harvest is here!
The harvest is here!”

Your book is a timely tool in a world on the brink of destruction and without any hope. Your words are an inspiration for me to continue to labor for the Master from the dawn to setting sun. Thanks for making the time to challenge all of us on the front lines to go a step farther behind enemy lines to reach the lost at any cost. "NO greater love hath a man than to lay down his life for another". Great book.
